Next Stop: Christmas

Next Stop: Christmas

‘Tis the season! It’s the most wonderful time of the year. A time of family, friends, giving, and being jolly. When you pair this with crowded shopping malls and stores, scrambling to find the right gift, and Christmas parties every weekend; nutrition tends to go to the bottom of your list.

This time of year seems to be the worst with temptations around every corner. Within the past week I’ve had an office holiday party, chocolates delivered from our flower vendor, and walnut squares delivered for the office from the CEO’s mother. Some of these are treats that I can say no to, and others I am able to plan for. The holiday party was scheduled weeks in advance, so there was no excuse for me to fall off the wagon here. I had a light breakfast, filled with mostly protein, a little more carbs and fat at lunch so that I was going into this open bar party with some substance in me, and then was able to have two glasses of champagne and a walnut square while also grazing the veggie tray!

Now, I understand I likely didn’t have the exact recipe for those walnut squares, but tracking and putting something in that is close will hold you accountable rather than going in blindly. If you have these type of events coming up, plan for them! Save a few of your macros for the alcohol you will have, and treat yourself to a dessert. You don’t have to be “that person” at the party that shows up with a food scale, brings their own food, and doesn’t drink (but if you are that committed and want to…by all means DO IT). Having a potluck? Take something healthy for everyone to enjoy, or even something not-so-healthy that you can at least calculate the correct macros for. After the party, I was still a little hungry, so my boyfriend and I went out for sushi; which is super easy to have only protein with all the raw little fishies.

So, enjoy your holiday! Don’t turn your healthy habits into a burden during this time of fun and laughter. As you can see, my co-workers may still look at me like I’m “that person,” but if you know me, it is likely for reasons other than how I eat. Although it could be that too… And remember, your nutrition coach sees you when your sleeping, they know when your awake, they know if you’ve been hitting your macros, so hit your macros for goodness sake!
