BC Endurance Athlete Highlight- Roy Ching

roy3HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN INTO SPORTS? IF SO WHAT
DID(DO) YOU PLAY, EVENTS YOU DONE, FITNESS ROUTINES YOU HAVE TRIED?

I was a late bloomer getting into sports because my father was in the Air Force, so we moved around a lot.  I got into sports in Middle School with basketball and soccer. I ran Cross Country and Track in High School after being cut from the basketball team.  It’s funny how God has different plans for your life even at that young age.  I later walked onto the cross country team at HPU where I ran for two years.   That was over 25 years ago and my body has changed. It doesn’t quite recover as quickly as it did before, but my competitive mindset is still sharp.  It’s a joy to have the body accomplish what the body is asking it to do, but recovery becomes important as I get older.  I have competed in so many races I can’t even name them- from marathons to 5k’s.  I got into Triathlon about 3.5 years ago when my knees started giving me trouble from constant running. My friend Jacob Holmes encouraged me to keep it up with triathlon because it’s something I could do for the rest of my life.   Instead of having one sport to focus on, I had three to work on. I have met so many great people from the Waxhachie Running and Triathlon Club.  Being in this sport, takes a lot of work because its three different skillsets.

BIGGEST BC ENDURANCE ACCOMPLISHMENT?

I was so glad to find the Buffalo Crossfit Endurance Class.  It is designed to strengthen my body in a way that also strengthens me as a Triathlete. It is an intense workout that I can complete before work. It is convenient and I have seen such good results.  Not only am I stronger over all, I have so much more muscle definition! My wife is a fan, haha!  Actually, she told me to write that part.  I enjoy that the workouts are among like minded people who are in endurance sports as well. The atmosphere is encouraging and inspiring.  The competition that arises occasionally is also really fun!  Probably my biggest accomplishment at the CrossFit gym was being able to do the workout Gobbler again with Aimee and to see how much progress I’ve made.  Surprisingly, I was still sore, but that’s a different story.

BC ENDURANCE GOAL FOR THE FUTURE?

To keep getting stronger.  To continue translating my BC Endurance workouts as gains on the bike, swim, and run. Also to become a stronger athlete overall.  I also want to inspire others to keep a lifestyle of fitness because it translates into a healthier life overall.

FAVORITE PAST TIME?

Would you believe me if I said my favorite pastime is working out? I love to take my son on the bike trailer all around Waxahachie and spending time outdoors with my family.  I like to take long bike rides when I do get the chance.

royFAVORITE CHEAT MEAL?

I don’t actually have a cheat meal. I will say that I can probably eat my weight in steak.

WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE WHO IS SCARED TO TRY BC ENDURANCE TRAINING?

I would say, just give it a try! Everyone is scared the first time they try something new.  Everyone is on a different level and the workouts are adjusted to meet you at the level you begin at. The community there is such a gain it helps dissolve every fear.  Form is emphasized at the gym to insure that you don’t get injured during the workout.  With a coach like Kelly or Josh overseeing your workout, they’re going to make sure you don’t hurt yourself in the process.  It’s quite okay to use a lighter weight and no one is going to judge you.  We’ve all started somewhere and why not workout with like minded people.
